First Date Tips For Scoring a Second Date

by Elizabeth McGee

Ahh, that first date. It could be a wonderful thing or it could be a disaster. I'd venture to say that there have been more disastrous first dates than terrific ones.

Your first date is important if you want to achieve future dates with someone. Your first date may also help you determine that you don't want a second date, but let's not go there. Let's assume that you want to put your best foot forward and establish a relationship with your date.

Here's a few tips that will help increase your chances for a second date:

1. Relax. Don't be nervous. Stay calm. Getting tongue-tied or appearing up-tight can turn people off. Pretend you're with a familiar friend. Do what comes natural and don't try to be something you are not.

2. Wear your nicest clothes or buy some new ones! You've heard the old adage, "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression", so make it a good one the first time. Dress smartly and follow good grooming and hygiene tips.

3. Try to establish a common interest early on. This will give you both the ability to talk with enthusiasm and will also be a topic you can return to if the conversation goes dry.

4. Keep it light and casual. It's often a good idea to simply meet for coffee or lunch. This often gives you time to get to know someone better without the extended commitment of a full evening out.

5. Don't tell your entire life story too early on. Dating advice experts recommend saving topics like relationship stories, religion, politics, and other hot topics until you know each other better.

6. Be interesting. Granted, there are people who spend their entire lives learning how to be interesting. However, being interesting doesn't mean spouting lots of interesting facts and figures or knowing lots of things. The most interesting people I know are those that are 'interested'. Be interested in your date, listen to him/her and show respect. You'll be amazed how interesting you'll become.

7. Keep your phone turned off, or if it rings don't answer it. You wouldn't run up to someone and rudely interrupt their conversation would you? Then don't let your phone interrupt your conversation. That's what they make messages for.

8. If you're out for an evening be careful how much you drink. If you drink too much you won't be at your best. It's also a good way to turn off your date.

9. If you're a man always be a gentleman. No matter what you've heard before, chivalry is not dead. Hold the door, let her go first and always offer to pay. Not all women hold true to these customs. Some women prefer to pay their own way and don't care if someone holds the door, but she'll at least see that you're willing to make the effort and that's always a positive.

10. Don't be negative. Focus on only positive things. Don't talk about how much you hate your job or how much you hate your roommate or how poor you are. If you find yourself turning towards the negative then move on to a new subject.
